Structure of PLAB Examination

The PLAB is divided into two parts:

PLAB 1: Clinical Knowledge Test

It focuses upon testing the knowledge and the basic medical science in clinical situations.

Subjects: Range covered includes topics on Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and General Practice.

Format: MCQ exam covering broad clinical areas. 180 questions.

PLAB 2: Practical Skills Test

Eligibility Criteria for PLAB

To sit for the PLAB exam, international medical graduates must be able to meet one of the listed eligibility criteria:

Medical Degree:

You should hold a recognized medical qualification by the General Medical Council (GMC). These include most medical schools across the globe, but it would be prudent for one to find if their qualification is included in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

In short, only MBBS holders are eligible to sit in this exam.

Language English Proficiency:

Since the PLAB tests medical knowledge in the English language, you must prove that you possess a good level of English. This is usually done through one of the following:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): At least 7.5 in all four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

OET (Occupational English Test): A ‘B’ or above grade in each of the four skills for the test.

GMC Registration:

You first need to have provisional registration with the GMC before applying for PLAB 1. You then will be eligible for full GMC registration after passing both PLAB 1 and PLAB 2.

GMC Registration Process

1. Requirement for GMC Registration

2. Register with GMC

Next, visit the GMC site: General Medical Council’s website.

Next, click on the ‘Top of The Page” Register” tab to kick off your registration process. You will then be expected to enter your private details such as:

• Full name
• Date of birth
• Contact information
• Nationality

Verify that the information submitted is accurate and corresponds with the information to be found on your official documents.

3. Fill out the Application Form for GMC Registration Online

Once you have set up an account, ensure you login to the GMC portal and fill out the online application for GMC registration:  

• Type of Registration: Check PLAB Route if applying. This is the route to be selected for GMC registration on successful completion of the PLAB. 
• Upload your Medical Qualifications: Provide photocopies of your basic medical qualification endorsed as true copies of the documents by the original issuing institution and confirm that the qualification is registered with GMC.  
• Set Examination as Proof of English Language: You will need to take the IELTS or OET exams and this applies to many international students. 

4. Payment of the Registration Fees 

Application registration has a fee that must be paid as part of the application registration process. Fees may differ so check GMC for details on current fees.

5. PLAB 1 First Test 

PLAB 1 goals the knowledge and application of medical content to web-based scenarios within exams and topics such as medicine surgery, psychiatry and obstetrics, etc. After Passing of PLAB 1 you can schedule PLAB 2. 

You Should log into the GMC portal to apply and book for PLAB 1.

6. PLAB 2

As a candidate for PLAB 2, you must have successfully taken PLAB 1. PLAB 2 is an examination of clinical skills that is simulated during an interaction with a patient in a medical center accredited by the GMC. 7. Your Documents Must Be Submitted

8. Application for Full Registration

9. Await Further Instructions

In case you submit the application form, two things can happen. It is either approved or rejected by the GMC. This takes some weeks to complete. 10. Get Started with Your Medical Career in the UK

How to Apply for PLAB

Step 1: Sign up with the GMC
